Family Live Arts Cultural Series: Japanese Children’s Festival
May 9 @ 5:15 pm - 7:00 pm

Celebrate the good health and happiness of children during a Japanese Children’s Festival!
This event features a joyful interactive celebration of Japan’s traditional music, dance and culinary tastes in observance of Pan Asian American Heritage Month.
Families will be invited to sample traditional Japanese foods. Children will create origami samurai helmets and Koinobori kite streamers, as well as learn about the enchanting art form of Kamishibai picture storytelling; observe and touch traditional Japanese musical instruments; and view displays of formal kimono dress, ceremonial tea sets and more.
Master Takaharu Fukuzawa will give a martial arts sword demonstration, followed by performances on the classical instruments of koto, shinobue and shamisen.
Members of Swarthmore College’s Taiko Ensemble will then take the stage with their powerful rhythmic drumming.
The celebration will end with performers inviting families to participate in a festive Bon Odori folk dance!
This event is geared toward families with children 2-12 years old and is pay-what-you-wish with a suggested donation of $25 per family/$5 per person.
