Acrylic Painting Workshop: Homage to “The Florida Highwaymen”

During the late 1950s, a group of 26 African American artists became known as the The Florida Highwaymen. Traveling along Florida’s East Coast highways, they sold their vibrant landscape paintings wherever they could—along roadsides, in parking lots, and by going door-to-door to local businesses. Despite facing racial barriers of the era, they were remarkably prolific and built successful careers selling their artwork for about $20 per painting. Today, their works are highly sought after and can be worth thousands of dollars, making them an important part of Florida’s artistic and cultural history.

This class pays tribute to their distinctive style and lasting legacy while giving participants the opportunity to create their own Highwaymen-inspired landscape painting.
