DESCRIPTION:During the late 1950s\, a group of 26 African American artists became known as the The Florida Highwaymen. Traveling along Florida’s East Coast highways\, they sold their vibrant landscape paintings wherever they could—along roadsides\, in parking lots\, and by going door-to-door to local businesses. Despite facing racial barriers of the era\, they were remarkably prolific and built successful careers selling their artwork for about $20 per painting. Today\, their works are highly sought after and can be worth thousands of dollars\, making them an important part of Florida’s artistic and cultural history. \nThis class pays tribute to their distinctive style and lasting legacy while giving participants the opportunity to create their own Highwaymen-inspired landscape painting. \nAll supplies are included. \nMore Information\n

For many years\, local children enjoyed swinging from a rope attached to the long\, slanted branch of this iconic sycamore tree that grew along the creek bank. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-depth discussion with sculptor and ceramic artist Syd Carpenter. \nIn a career spanning 50 years\, Carpenter started off as a clay artist before evolving to mixed media installation. Much of her work in the last two decades has focused on the relationship between the land and African American farmers and gardeners. \nCarpenter was a professor of Studio Art at Swarthmore College for 30 years before retiring in 2022. She is now a Professor Emerita of Studio Art and holds the Endowed Peggy Chan Professorship of Black Studies. \nHer work is in the collections of numerous museums\, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the University of Illinois; Canton Ohio Museum of Art; Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute; and in numerous private collections. \nHer awards and fellowships include a Pew Fellowship in the Arts; Leeway Foundation Grants\, National Endowment for the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships. \nShe is currently working as an independent artist in Philadelphia\, continuing to exhibit nationally and internationally. $10 and includes a reception with the artist after. \nMore Information

DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of digital creativity! In Digital Art Studio\, students will explore a variety of techniques and tools available in popular drawing apps. Each session introduces fun and accessible approaches to digitial design\, complete with easy-to-follow tips. \nThrough hands-on projects\, students will bring their ideas to life while learning how to make the most of digital art tools. Teaching artist Keville Bowen creates a true studio experience—giving plenty of time for students to experiment\, practice\, and receive personalized feedback. Along the way\, he shares his favorite professional tips and tricks to help every young artist grow in confidence and skill. \nDROP-IN OPTION: If you are unable to commit to the full session\, there is a “drop-in” studio option\, Select the dates that work for you and drop-on-in. Take a Tuesday night to come work on your digital art projects with Keville’s guidance. 24-hour advanced notice preferred for Keville to prepare. \nStudents will be working towards publishing a digital comics anthology by the end of the session.  \nMore Information
