Vessels Pinched and Coiled: Beginning Hand-Building
Wednesday, January 18, 2023, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
$450Presented by Utility Works
Ceramic vessels are one of our earliest technologies: the powerful ability to contain and move liquid or grain. Pinched and coiled pots, while simple to construct, have virtually endless forms with specific uses. The qualities that make a vessel good for displaying flowers might make it poor for serving gravy. This 8 week course will teach beginning pinching and coiling techniques and ceramic glazing skills. Using our hands and simple tools, we’ll create hollow containers both functional and sculptural. We’ll explore vessels by beginning with what we want them to hold, starting with hand-sized pots and working up to larger pieces. With these flexible clay techniques students may build vases, bowls, cups, planters, boxes, jugs, lanterns, and more. We will also view images of ceramic designs ancient to modern, and explore our homes for vessel forms. This class is designed for complete beginners, but intermediate potters will also find it helpful.
Supplies included in the ticket price: 25lbs of clay as well as use of all studio tools and glazes. Just bring a sketchbook and pencil!
