A treat as 2025 begins:  The amazing Cuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa and Russian pianist Ilya Yakushev perform works by Debussy, Shostakovich, and more on Sunday, January 5 at 3 pm at Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon.  Q&A and reception with the artists following the concert.

The recipient of the Sphinx Organization’s 2023 Medal of Excellence, its highest honor, Tommy Mesa has been lauded for his “brilliant” (Boston Music Intelligencer) playing.  He has appeared as soloist at the Supreme Court of the United States on four occasions and with major orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, and The Philadelphia Orchestra, toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Itzhak Perlman, and is the principal cellist of Sphinx Virtuosi.  His career was launched when he won First Prize in the 2016 Sphinx Competition and 2017 Astral Artists National Auditions.

Winner of the 2005 World Piano Competition, Ilya Yakushev received his first award at age 12 at the Young Artists Concerto Competition in St. Petersburg and most recently received the prestigious Gawon International Music Society’s Award.  He has performed with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, BBC Concert Orchestra, Boston Pops, and many others, as well as in recital across the world.  As American Record Guide wrote, “it doesn’t seem to matter what repertoire he plays – it is all of the highest caliber.”
