Smarts and Culture & MAC Music: All Roads Lead to Brazil
Thursday, February 17, 2022, 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
$25Critic and musician Tom Moon spent nearly four years writing his 2008 bestseller 1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die (Workman). After researching and listening to music from every corner of the earth, Moon went in the other direction, doing a deep (some would say obsessive) dive into music from a single place: Brazil.
In this discussion and performance, Moon shares what drew him to samba, bossa nova and other rhythms – and will perform classics from those styles with guitarist Ryan McNeely and percussionist Jim Hamilton of Moon’s group Ensemble Novo. The five-piece, which debuted in 2013 with the album Blue Night, performs regularly in the Philadelphia region. It has recorded works by the titans of Brazilian song – Pixinguinha, Antonio Carlos Jobin, Baden Powell, Edu Lobo – on a series of acclaimed EPs including the 2021 Carinhoso.
