Kelly Center Presents: Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble with Gabe Locati, Mike Fox and John Lionarons
Saturday, October 22, 2022, 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
$5 – $15The Philadelphia Mandolin & Guitar Ensemble performs the exciting music of the classical mandolin & guitar. The musical selections focus on a sound where classical and folkloric music meet. Rhythms including rumbas, tangos, mazurkas, polkas, waltzes, tarantellas, marches among others. The library of the ensemble includes hundreds of pieces dating back to 1890 as well as modern compositions. Mandolins, Mandolas, Mandocellos and Spanish guitar create a sound both romantic and dynamic. Join us as we perform the music we love on instruments to which we are dedicated.
Gabriel Locati is a current student at Temple University studying mandolin performance with Allen Krantz. He is a native of the Philadelphia area and has performed on mandolin and mandocello in the Munier Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra, the Philadelphia Mandolin and Guitar Ensemble, and the East Coast Mandolin Orchestra. Before attending Temple University, Gabriel studied with Patrick Mercuri. In 2019, Gabriel placed 2nd in the Rowan University Concerto Competition, Junior division.
Mike Fox is a student of Mandolin tradition. Most people don’t think of the mandolin as a jazz instrument. But jazz mandolin has a small but dedicated community, pioneered by Dave Appolon, Jethro Burns, and Tiny Moore and carried on today by Don Stiernberg, Will Patton, Paul Glasse, and others. Mike Fox will lead a small combo, playing a few jazz standards. We hope you hip cats dig what we’re puttin’ down!
