Cup Design Deep Dive: Beginning Wheel-Throwing

Cup Design

Eight Weeks Starting Wednesday, April 12 ·

What makes a cup a cup? What makes a cup a “good” cup? Why do we use some cups in our cabinet more often than others?

This 8-week course will teach beginning wheel throwing and ceramic glazing skills by exploring these questions. We will cover the entire process of making a wheel thrown ceramic cup, including design ideation, throwing, trimming, making handles, and surface decoration. We will also view images of cup designs ancient to modern, and explore our own mug collections.

By producing small, functional forms students will build confidence and proficiency in both craftspersonship and critical decision making. Students will leave this class with cups they enjoy using, and the ability to explain why they enjoy them. The pottery skills covered in this course will be applicable to forms other than cups, but by focusing on drinking vessels we will be able to build on new skills rapidly in a short period of time.

This class is designed for complete beginners, but intermediate potters will also find it helpful. With only five students in the class, each potter will receive personal attention, hands-on instruction, and individualized critique.
