$20Join Philly Cuban band sensation Conjunto Philadelphia for two hot sets at the MAC Arts Center.
Conjunto Philadelphia is a musical ensemble based in the Philadelphia area. The band performs music of pre-Revolutionary Cuba, including the Son, Cha-Cha-Chá and Bolero. The group’s main aspiration is to pay homage to Cuba’s deep and treasured musical history as well as infuse a new energy and fresh interpretation into the music.
Conjunto Philadelphia was founded in 2010 by Jeff Torchon as a way to recreate the incredible music he heard on the Buena Vista Social Club album and documentary. To this end, Jeff has traveled to Cuba numerous times to experience Cuban culture and bring back music to integrate into the ensemble. The other members of Conjunto Philadelphia share Jeff’s quest to interpret and bring alive the music of pre-Revolutionary Cuba. All of the band’s musicians have impressive musical backgrounds and also perform many other musical genres (jazz, blues, rock, folk) in addition to their work with Conjunto Philadelphia. The band benefits from this impressive wealth of knowledge and is able to produce culturally rich Cuban music through the dedication of each and every member of the ensemble.
Conjunto Philadelphia has performed at many venues in the Philadelphia area, including: the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Longwood Gardens, Chris’ Jazz Café, World Café Live!, the Exit Zero Jazz Festival, the Philadelphia Center City Jazz Festival and the Penn Museum. They are the featured act at a monthly event called Havana Nights, hosted by arts and culture keystone World Café Live!, where they bring the community together to share in Cuban music, food, drinks and dancing. This event regularly sells out.
The band has also given school workshops and performed at numerous private events in the mid-Atlantic US. In addition, the band’s self-titled CD, “Conjunto Philadelphia” was released in January of 2019.
