Delaware County Symphony Series: The Koussevitzky Connection
Sunday, May 7, 2023, 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
$17 – $20The final Symphony Series concert of the season is entitled The Koussevitzky Connection.
Serge Koussevitzky was the music director the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1924 to 1949. He was a great champion of modern music, commissioning and premiering many works from prominent composers of his time. The first work on the program, Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, was initially recorded in 1945 by Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Based on Copland’s ballet for choreographer and dancer Martha Graham, it remains as one of his most popular compositions. The other work on the program with a connection to Serge Koussevitzky is the Symphony No. 2 by Howard Hanson. The symphony was commissioned by Koussevitzky for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1930. Often called the “Romantic” symphony, it is richly orchestrated with lyrical and lush melodies.
Also on the program will be the Viola Concerto by British composer Sir William Walton. It will be performed by Youth Concerto Competition winner Sophia Nam. This concerto was written in 1929 and is recognized as one of the greatest compositions for viola and orchestra.
Please join us on May 7 for a program of varied and inspiring music of the twentieth century.
