Class: Comedy Writing And Performance
Saturday, April 8, 2023, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
$250Six weekly classes, 90 minutes per class, Saturdays at 11:00 AM, starting April 8 through May 13
This introductory/intermediate Comedy Writing and Performance class is open to anyone interested in turning personal experience and/or observations into comedic work. We’ll explore highlights of mediums that are of interest to students, including but not limited to: satire writing, personal essay, Onion-style pieces, Instagram/Tik-Tok style videos, stand up comedy, sketch writing, musical comedy and more. I will build the curriculum around the interests of the class, but each week we will be learning one or two core skills that I believe help the most successful work shine. Weekly assignments and peer review will allow students to leave the course with the seeds of a portfolio and the confidence that they can continue to grow as an artist.
Teacher: Max Barth
Max Barth is a comedian and writer whose work has been published in The New Yorker, Reductress, The Hard Times and more. He was selected to perform at the Red Clay Comedy Festival in Atlanta, Georgia in 2019. He was a regular at Philadelphia’s Good Good Comedy Theatre, where he hosted and co-produced gameshow “The Tinder Show”, political variety show “Party Lines” and was a member of sketch comedy group Darlings (“a who’s-who of Philly comedy” – Phindie Mag).
He believes that core comedic writing skills can be learned and practiced on or off stage and that every person has the ability to translate their experiences into engaging comedic work. Our final class meeting will be a show or reading of student work from those comfortable with sharing it. Friends & family are welcome to attend.
