Women Songwriters in the Round – Lili Anel, PEEKS!, Kathleen Emmerson & Renee Koma

March is Women’s History Month. Facilitator Amanda Wessel will lead a discussion among our songwriters about their songwriting influences, subjects, techniques and more. The songwriters will take turns performing their songs.
Songwriters will include Lili Anel, PEEKS!, Katheen Emmerson and Renee Koma.
Lili Añel, New York native, now based in Philadelphia, captivates her audience with her unique style which she calls a hybrid of “Jazz/Folk/Soul/Pop”. Whether engaging you in one of her original songs or reinterpreting Nina Simone, she makes these classics her own, holding the listener in the in the palm of her hand. From Greenwich Village to her new home base in Philadelphia, she continued to move audiences with her songs, now more jazz-inspired, highlighting themes reflecting her hope for the future, standing in her truth of life’s difficulties and conjuring the strength for perseverance. All delivered with that unique voice, alternating between low reaches one feels in their center and a sweeter, more vulnerable falsetto. Lili website
Kathleen Emmerson. Until recently, I was a visual artist only; but, I am not sure why, as I come from a musical family. My training was non-stop listening to WFIL and WIBG radio stations in Philly. Fast forward to 2022, I decided to learn to play the guitar. Little did I know it would become my absolute passion. If I liked a song, I’d hit up Google, found the chords, learned to play the chords and went from there. Then I braved some open mics, terrifying! That in conjunction with advice, kindness and patience from my talented family and friends, has moved me along. Like anyone who writes scripts, books, and music, inspiration comes from personal experience. To me, that is the core! This can also make the creator quite vulnerable, your soul is out for all, to love or not.

With dozens of notebooks of melodies and poems, she has a countless repertoire of original pieces.
